Olive finished the last gulps of her stew, watching the NPC waitress almost instantly appear to ask her for payment. She pushed the computer generated pest a small sum, the tax for her warm breakfast, then got up and threw her cloak over her shoulders. She was off to meet another player and help out on a quest. She was eager for the payment, mostly, and maybe her partner would proove to be a likeable person. Ratman's Cage was a dangerous place, and havign an ally would have been a marvelous opportunity.

She walked out of the Watcher's Pub, poeple scurrying past her in the busy hours of midday. Children running around, playing, men and women taking baskets to the marketplace, full of goods. Olive sometimes felt the city was so alive, but she had to keep focused and remember that this was all just a cruel prison in which she was forced to fight like a dog for her life. She pushed through the crowd until she reached an empty alley and popped up her UI screen with a snap of her fingers. She selected the 'Teleportation' tab, as always, and then scrolled down until the option to teleport to her quest was available. She braced herself, willing that the stew wouldn't rise out of her stomach by the tme she arrived. 'Talking about bad first impressions.'

The feeling of teleportation was entirely new, and there were little words that could fully describe it. Olive chose to describe it as the feeling of free-falling, only you don't actually fall, but more likely move to the side at the same time. Sometimes even she didn't understand her thoughts. By the time she stumbled in the forest, (lacking mastery of the skill was the reason this complication appeared, but needless to say, the arrival was anything but graceful) she could see the caravan awaiting both her and her partner through a couple of thick bushes.

Olive was partly thankfull the foliage had shielded her from the view of the NPCs. She walked up to them, exchanged brief pleasantries and then refrained herself from talking. Interacting with the uncanny products of heavy coding sent shivers down her spine. The mage awaited quietly for the arrival of her partner.

Mackenzie had already been on her own in Roslare, exploring around the castle. Well, if by exploring, you counted her delving into the depths of her UI. Trying to find out every little trick there was to it was something she had started devoting a lot of time to. Teleportation was one of the more obvious ones, but one of her favorites was to set a reminder for when she could teleport for an event.

It just so happened that quests counted.

The little chime had been a sound only she could hear, and it gave her a little message.

Quest Objective
Location : Maeko Forest
Accept - Deny

Without hesitation, Mackenzie selected the accept option. The sensation of teleportation was still a bit... confusing. It didn't hurt, leave her dizzy, or anything. It felt almost as if she was simply being picked up and carried, but with a gust of wind hitting every inch of her body at the same time. That was the best way she could describe it. However, there was little else for her to really do now that she was where she needed to be.

A quick scan of her surroundings found her close enough to her "objective," which was the group of supply folks she had to supposedly help escort. Ah well, she didn't see any trouble with it. After taking a bit of interest into surveying the group, her cyan eyes also led her to her partner for the task - Olive Beaufort. She didn't know a whole lot about them, but, they had both taken up the quest. Might as well get more acquainted with the players. "Hey. You ready for this?"

The mage didn't have to wait long for her partner. Mackenzie Herman... she remembered just that she had a brother around here, too, but not anything else. She smiled and nodded at her partner's question. From the looks of it, she was a ranger, and she was definitely more agreable than Lilian. The quest, in her mind, was going to be easy, least the passage throuh the Yseult ruins. They did have a map, but in her latest visit there, some of the Wicken had been less than glad to see a player. She was still trying to figure out why those creatures liked that place so much. "We should be fine, I guess." she said, grabbing hold of the caravan just as the NPCs put it in motion, thus using it as a meanmof transport.

The paths were easy to follow and Olive, even if she carefully traced the way they had closed, had time to stop and look around. Her newest piece of equipment dangled polished from her back, a long, wooden quarterstaff. It wasn't going to be long until she was out of the first level. As the path prooved to be easy to follow, at least for now, Olive dropped down from the caravan and started walking besides Mackenzie. If they were going to face the Wicken, they had to be careful. She conjured up her UI, scrolling to select the 'Wildlife' tab. She could see all of the five categories, four still locked from her, but that was not the matter right now. She chose the 'Wildlife Of The First Level' and then the picture of the Wicken popped up with another tap of her finger.

"This is a Wicken, if you haven't fought one before, they like to conjure some pretty explosive spells. Best to dealt with them before they deal with you." she explained, looking at the lifeless eyes of the creature. "Maybe we'll be lucky and meet a friendly one. Maybe." she mumbled before snapping her fingers and closing the UI, making the disturbing image vanish. The caravan continued in front of them and Olive bussied herselfmwith marking their advance upon the road.

Mackenzie gave a nonchalant shrug in response to Olive's hope of being okay. Safety wasn't a huge bother to the Ranger, she could run like hell if push came to shove. If anything came to hurt her it'd be a game of "catch me if you can." Which, if they could she'd be surprised. She had pretty good HP too, judging by her UI. There'd definitely need to be an upgrade to her stats though... She was severely lacking in more than one stat. Would that be a thing? She hoped so.

Within her UI, Mackenzie had already found the map and had it activate to hover in what was more or less the bottom left of her vision. Considering she took the left side of the caravan to lead it, she could use her peripheral vision to watch both her partner and the caravan they had to lead.

Mackenzie's attention was drawn when Olive pulled up the picture of the Wicken. A chill trilled down Mackenzie's spine. Magic? No thank you. She bit her inner lip and gave a hopeful glance towards the other girl. "If you don't mind, I'll leave the magic stuff to you. Well, attacking at least. I don't mind playing prey if push comes to shove for a battle." Her fingers brushed quickly through the ends of her blonde hair, glancing around.

"I've battled one or two things from here, but as I said. I'll leave the magic stuff to you."

Olive nodded reluctantly, not quite sure what to say to that. She didn't know whether the Wicken were also approachable by melee combat, but she remembered that Lilian had managed to fight of a coulpe of those creatures using her bow. She decided not to comment and enjoy the moment of being basically put in charge. It was nice, granted it wouldn't last for long, and after the mission was over she would be back to being a mage shielding herself from the spotlight like a vampire. She bounded forwards as soon as the road split and the NPC caravaneers stopped, awaiting instruction.

She looked on her map. From this point on the road was becoming more treacherous and they were minutes away from the ruins. The mage wondered whether she could smell the old stone and rotting plants from here, but there was no faint trace of them. She laughed, quietly. 'Nature sure knows how to mask itself.' she smiled inwardly before returning to mapping their advance. She was slightly nervous, that a swarm of Wickens could damage the cargo and scare the NPCs, thus destroying their chances of completing this mission, but she had to think optimistically and not get scared by a thought. It was hard.

"From what I know, getting some arrows through them certainly helps getting them distracted." she commented as they continued on the twisting paths which became more and more difficult to navigate. The caravan stopped often to ask for instruction and Olive was forced to check the map every now and then, wondering if they were on track. It was hard to say luckily, but in the end they managed to reach the entrance of the ruins. Olive came to the realization that the tunnel that she had escaped on her last visit there was a secondary exit. This, on the other hand, was a vast opening which beckoned them in eerily.

The small talk that Olive offered to Mackenzie about the wildlife was a bit awkward. The information was definitely nice, but it didn't really carry any interest or make the trek go any faster. "I can run like hell, so I guess if I shot an arrow for them to track down I could play prey afterwards. Hopefully we won't have to battle any." So far, it seemed like she was correct.

As Olive decided on the routes, Mackenzie would double-check them with her little corner map. She seemed to know the way rather well, which was a definite relief. She could follow a map with amazing accuracy, but she would rather not get lost. Her gaze kept traveling back to the people in the caravan, dropping behind to assure them if they grew weary or give them the status update. They seemed to really just go along with things. Good thing they were NPCs.

Hitting the ruins, Mackenzie's gut dropped in her stomach. Something about this place didn't settle right with her, but she didn't really have a choice. They had to go through them. Turning towards Olive, Mackenzie's hands absent-mindedly fidgeted with the quiver of arrows on her belt. "Do you know your way through here at all?"

Olive stopped for a few moments in front of the entrance, regaining her spirit. The ruins loomed dangerously and she was scared of what would lie inside. The mage just had to assume the map they had been given was correct, which had been established in the early part of their journey. With a short prayer that they would no encounter any Wicken, she checked the winding paths and urged the NPCs to follow a certain path. From the maze she could make out, that was the right way, and hopefully that hadn't been a wrong turn. Getting out of the ruins was one of the most important things right now, and getting lost would be a huge drawback.

The mage pulled down besides Mackenzie, observing with a squeeze of her lips how the other girl fiddled with the tips of her arrows. Maybe she wasn't the only nervous person in their party. The NPCs that drove their caravan didn't seem concerned with anything beyond their repetitive lines of speech, which Olive found both relieving, as she was not in the mood to deal with distressed virtual beings, and eerie at the same time. Sometimes Olive felt like their were creatures to which the world flew past, and they couldn't quite grasp its reality fully, being stuck in their own, blank world.

"I've been here before, and I have a map." she reassured her teammate half-heartedly as they advanced in a huge open space. Olive sighted the place where once she had stood on a balcony, now the sign of a huge blast around the empty doorway that led to darkness, the one from which a Wicken had come and almost killed her. She shuderrd but held her ground. She tried to grasp her sixth mage-ish sense, the one fpwhich allowed her to briefly sense a spell before it was cast, to detect the bulging mana. She could feel traces now and then, but nothing to be sure of.

The confirmation that Olive somewhat knew where she was going was enough for her. Giving a curt nod, her eyes glanced back at the corner of her map. They were on a good path so far. "I'm going to hop into the Caravan with the NPCs, keep them company. Shout if you need me." She slowed her pace so the caravan was placed beside her, jogging lightly beside it. With a strangely large amount of grace, she lept onto it. Quickly finding little footholes, she was able to get herself onto the top of it, to observe the area around her.

The eerie feeling of the ruins jumped out of her, and the darkness that submerged her vision when they went in didn't make her feel any better in the slightest. Considering the Wicken were mage-like creatures, she put faith that her partner could tell when they showed up. After all, she seemed to know what they were like.

Gone were the innocent, indestructible Betaflies. It was completely dark now. A sick sense washed over her, and a knot of dread filled her stomach. In defense, Mackenzie slipped her bow from around her body, pressing it closely against her side. Nothing happen, please... I'd rather not battle... Let this quest be easy, pass quickly... Her hopes were materialized in silent thoughts. She kept one hand tightly grasping her bow, and another resting just beside her arrow quiver. Quietly, she counted her arrows.

Noting how many she had, a silent nod was passed as her eyes adjusted to the dark area. The NPC's had small lanterns to light the area, although they offered little for her hovering at the top. She thought she saw eyes glowing in the dark, and that didn't settle her nerves in any way. Kenzie wasn't ready to fight, she was built to run.

Olive nodded quietly and watched the ranger go, climb swiftly on the caravan. Unlike rangers, mages wren't built to be athletic, granted she was slightly good at it, due to being light and having played many games on the long, knotted streets of Paris. The girl watcned the darkness fall, the NPC's light their lanterns, spreading a warm glow. She was quick to adjust her pace so she walked in the reassuring light. Straying towards the edge of the ring of light, into the darkness, seemed foolish.

Olive didn't bother to light her own flame. She wanted to test of her staff and see how she could fight with it, so she pulled her hood over her head, walking quietly, lost in thought. The girl wandered whther Mackenzie's words had merely been a lame excuse to not walk by her, where it was more likely for the Wickens to strike. Something flickered in the liht, breifly, accompanied to by the trailing of leaves. The mage pulled out her weapon, walking quietly. Another flash, another Wicken straying into the light for a few moments. She sighted a face, of at least the bone skull covering one, but it shielded away as she glanced its way.

"I think they are... keeping us on the path?" she murmured, but she couldn't tell why. There were not many splits in the road through the ruins anyway, and she didn't know why those creatures would assist them with the path. She could only guess they wanted to keep them away from the actual ruins. Olive shiveed and grabbed with one hand on the caravan, being dragged up and thus travelling anchored to its side. She prayed for this to be over safely.

"If that's the case, I have no complaints. They may be guarding something - I'd hate to anger them." She tried to keep her voice as quiet as possible, but loud enough to where there'd be no mistaking whether or not Olive heard her. Whatever those Wicken actually were, she wanted to stay as far as possible from angering them.

As the caravan continued, it almost seemed like the Wicken were manipulating their path. Glancing at her map, they seemed to be going through an easy route. Maybe they had ran into a group of friendly ones? She prayed that was the case.

Olive, the more she was in the presence of those soul-sucked creatures, began to have questiins about them. What they ate, how did they actually turn into their current form, and many others, but she couldn't find satisfying answers to any of them. Every time one of them twitched a second into the firelight, she winced. It was getting dark outside and there was barely any visibility beyond the light of the caravan. The mage fought the urge to scare the Wickens off with her growing fireball.

The caravan came to an abrupt stop and Olive's heart started galloping, thinking something had happened. But as walked in the front, she obsrved that it was the merely turn that market the exit of the ruins. She checked her map and marked their safe advance throuh the ruins before giving directions to the NPCs. The road in the forest prooved to be bumpier and, even thouht it was wide and did not split too much, now the visibility was even more reduced by the canopy above them. Something sounded in the bushes.

Olive looked around, trying to sight whatever was rustling through the woods. Muffled footsteps, sounding big, made her heart skip. Something large was barely visible over the bushes that bordered the pathway. Tendrils hung from the back of its head. The mage checked her UI for anything alike it. She scrolled through the creatures until her eyes landed on something with the familiar long tendrils.

Boswin.

As they made the exit from the ruins, Mackenzie didn't let herself come down from the top of the caravan just yet. She was still rather weary about the idea that there may still be one of the Wicken on their trail. It wouldn't make a whole lot a sense to her, if they seemed to dwell purely in the ruins, but one never knew, and she really didn't want to take any chances.

Mackenzie's bright blue eyes darted back and forth from either side of the trail, as the girl wanted to make sure nothing would come her way to harm the goods the Caravan held, her partner, or the NPCs. Heavens knew she did not want to fail this quest. "Boswin..." She whispered, her careful voice being absorbed into the wood. She remembered the UI's description, as their own blue eyes stared back at her.

"Don't provoke them, Olive. Just keep going." She tapped lightly on the wood of the caravan, her message to the NPCs that they could keep continuing without worry.

Olive wated to snort and shoot back a witty remark. Was this girl dumb or did she expect of her to just go and punch the Bsowin in the face. But she said nothing, keeping deadly quiet. Even with every step she made an effort to muffle them, if fear that the Boswin would hear her walk and come straight at her. She was wondering whether it would be hostile. The UI said they were very intelligent, and would only atack if you attacked first. She held her head down and walked close to the caravan, hoping they would not been seen as a threat.

She pointed right as they found another split in the path. It was getting wider and wider and themage thought they must be nearing. The Boswin got out of sight for a few moments , and Olive thoguht they'd lost it, allowing herself a deep breath of relief, but the thing was soon back besides the path. The mage tried to take a guess at what it wanted. It seemed to be inching closer as they moved, but staying in the back. Sometimes light passed by its mane of tendrils, which shone a blinding silver.

Olive hopped on the back of the caravan, feeling unsafe down on the ground. She looked at her partner with a worried look on her face. If the Boswin decided to attack, chaos would be caused, and they would fail their objective. "Is it following us for food?" she tried to make a guess. A lot of stray dogs would follow her and her friends around town if they had food, but they didn't charge, much like the Boswin.
