The day had started out no different than any other Saturday the Herman family had come to know. The spring North Dakota weather was still frigid yet ever-warming, and the sun was gracing the plains in a warm smile. The most recent snow was now a distant memory, and meadowlarks filled the air with their songs.

Grandma Herman had sent this month’s spoil-the-kids money, and Shepard and Mackenzie wasted no time figuring out what they wanted. Of course, their parents had taught them to still set some money aside for something that might pop up. That money was saved in a glass jar kept on top of the fridge, and by now it was almost full.

“Leo, your mom is spoiling these two rotten…” The slightly disapproving mother chuckled as she watched her two children eagerly spring from the house, their feet bounding them towards the train stop that was only a couple blocks away. They were old enough now that the Hermans trusted them to go out on their own, given they were back before dinner. That was one proud rule they upheld - never miss dinner. Especially nights when Leo cooked.

As the day progressed, and lunch was approaching, the air in the household grew a bit more tense. While Keirsta had been busying herself with cleaning and laundry, her eyes still darted from the clock as the smell of Leo’s latest cuisine creation filled the air. Usually they were never this late… They always made it back in time to help their father prepare part of the meal. Knowing the twins, Keirsta suppressed her fears, taking it up that maybe the train home was simply running late. After all, that was what happened… right?

That was, until dinner was ready. She heard Leo’s call from the kitchen, to which the pink-haired woman finished folding the shirt she had just started before quickly jogging into the kitchen, a worried look on her face. ”They’re still not back yet, are they?”

Beef Wellington was a personal favorite of Leo's. It was easy to make, and pretty good to eat. It didn't take too long, but Leo drew out the process to get to spend time with the kids who would help him make dinner. Yet, no matter how long Leo drew out the process--he ended up finishing the meal with time on his hands. The individual wellingtons were wrapped in tinfoil and placed in the microwave in order to retain eat. The sides were sitting in the oven, not cooking--just ready to serve.

He finished cleaning the dishes he had cooked with, Leo wiped his wet hands on a red towel, and tossed it over his shoulder. With a quick glance at the time--it proved that they were much later than was expected. Normally they rushed home, even when they were late, it was only by a small bit. Not...this late.

At that moment the phone rang.

The blond didn't think he ever had a stronger feeling of dread than in that moment. His heart lurched and face paled. Leo looked as if he had not seen the sun in years. Considering his feeling, Leo did not want to pick up the phone. Parental instincts told him something was wrong. And hell--it was.

Despite that, he answered. What came out was a soft voice from his sister--Aleta.

"Turn on the news."

Click

Her soft, griefing voice was enough for Leo to call Keirsta into the room. He lunged around the counter and slid into the family room. His fingers fumbled with the remote on the coffee table, and with a click the TV turned on.

The show was not the news, rather on Food Network where the kids had watched a game of Cutthroat Kitchen before heading out. However, the father did not linger on that fact and typed in the channel number furiously for the news.

The heading of the news was a quick read--but enough for his legs to give out. Paired with the location...

"Two teens killed in drunk driver accident--currently in investigation"
Off of McQueen road and Lindsey bridge

Their favorite video game store was half a block down from that intersection. A helicopter flew overhead, police cars blocked the view of a damaged vehicle. It was part way off the bridge, saved by getting caught on the guard rail. "A coincidence. There is no way-"

"...the teens have been identified and their parents are being contacted currently."

A brief moment.

Silence.

Maybe they were okay..! It wasn't them.

Ring!

It was them.

Blue eyes shifted down to the phone. They bore into the phone number of the police. Understandably--Leo didn't want to answer. He wanted to deny everything--maybe then they would be safe, they would be home.

He couldn't put it off. With a slow thumb movement and a shaky sigh, the green button was pressed, the police began their spiel. His thumb pressed the speaker option, knowing his wife was listening.

Everything fell on deaf ears.

Everything except the fact that they were actively looking for the bodies. They assumed that the car pushed them over the railing into the valley below. They were trying to be hopeful. Even then, Leo wasn't dumb.

No one could survive that fall.

His children were gone.

Leo’s silence in response to her coming into the room was all she had to hear. She had heard the phone buzz, decidingly having left it up to Leo to answer considering with a quick glance it was obvious it had been his sister. While she had no issue with talking to Aleta, Keirsta found it better for her husband to talk to the family.

Her husband’s rush into the living room didn’t help the growing pit of dread in her stomach. Hell, he practically flew into the living room. At that exact moment, all time seemed to slow down.

The rush of Leo’s feet and body into the living room.

Keirsta going to follow not a second later, the plate she held slipping out of her hands and making a crash onto the floor.

Her own body scrambling to get into the front room as fast as she could.

Her brain didn’t even acknowledge the TV show that was plastered upon the LCD screen before the news flipped on. She had to know what had caused Leo’s panic, and there was only one of two things her mind could flit to - Aleta had been in an accident and it was on the news, or something happened to her children. She hoped it wasn’t the latter.

As she quickly scanned the heading on the news, her stomach dropped. No, it can’t be them. I can’t lose them… Her mind and heart began to race, and she completely ignored Leo’s hopeful words. No, she already knew.

The second that phone rang, her suspicions were confirmed. It was already hard to choke back any tears that welled in her cyan eyes, even with the chance of the harm that had come upon her children. But that ringing phone broke her.

Keirsta’s knees fell to the ground, and she didn’t even register the pain of the hardwood floors slamming upon her knees. No. There was too much emotional pain for her to register anything physical. She had already gotten a phone call of death once, and now this… Was every death of the people important to her going to be over the phone?

She crumpled to the floor, tears flooding from her eyes as her pink hair curled about her frame. Her body shook with silent sobs, trying to keep them away as her mind slipped in and out of listening to what the police had to say.

As they continued her rambling though, she couldn’t take it. ”Shutthemupshutthem up shut them up… SHUT IT UP!” Her voice started as a barely audible whisper, her voice cracking at every single sound that phone made.

Eventually, she reached up and just shoved her finger on the “end call” button.

Her children were gone.

None of them survived.

Out of three children… She couldn’t even save one. What type of mother was she? How could she have failed so miserably? First Annabelle, then Mackenzie and Shepard. How… who…

Her sobs didn’t quiet at all. Keirsta was still a curled heap of pink hair and clothes on the floor, the wails of a pained mother piercing the air. Whoever did this to her children… Whoever dared to take them from her… Deep down, her mind was already set on getting her vengeance... But presently, that anger was overtaken by pain.

There was little objection from Leo when Keirsta lashed out--pressing the 'end call' button. The man placed the phone to the far side to keep himself from throwing it across the room in a fit of emotion. Tears were already in his eyes, they glittered with the overflow of water. Everything hurt. His eyes--with the sudden tears. His throat--closed up, unable to say anything. His heart--for his children whom he may never see again. They had already been through so much, why did they have to be taken away too? What did they do to deserve it?

Suddenly, Leo couldn't keep the tears back. They sprung forth as the restraint on their release was lightened. They spilled down his cheeks like small rivers--each drop following the same path down his face. Drops landing on his hands, pooling then slipping off. A hiccup followed, matched with a redundant wipe of his face--merely spreading the tears across his eyes.

In his teary stupor, Leo was able to see Keirsta in her own world of grief. Seeing her upset like this was enough for him to let out a choked sob. He hated this. He hated losing his children. He hated seeing his wife like this. He hated crying. He hated everything. Sagged shoulders hunched further forward as the husband brought his wife into his arms. His forehead pressed against the top of her head. It made him feel just the slightest bit better knowing she was there with him. They wouldn't have to go through this alone once again.

While her grief did overpower her mind, she didn't let herself go completely blind to her husband's own. He was just as much part of this as she was. They had both gone through so much, from the start of this all. How he had ever had the strength to stay by her side - she had no idea. But to hear him break like this... it doubled her pain.

She knew better then almost anyone that Leo Herman rarely ever, ever could be pushed to tears. The only other time she ever saw him even shed a tear was when he got to hold Mackenzie and Shepard... Both of whom had just been ripped away from them. They didn't even get the chance to say goodbye...

"Hey Mom, can me and Shepard head down to the game store?" Mackenzie's hopeful voice chimed in the living room. Her brother was not very far behind her, basically beside her if not for a small step.

"So long as you're back in time for dinner. You can take some of the money from Oma if you'd like." Keirsta was busy cleaning behind the couch, her tall frame peeking out some from behind the leather shelter.

"We'll be back in time to help dad cook." Shepard offered, beaming at his sister whom had rushed into the kitchen to go grab the mentioned money.

"Alright. Be careful, you two know the rules otherwise." The mother said, a confident tone in her voice.

...
Be careful.

Those where the last words she had offered to her children. The two she trusted with her heart and soul to go out into the world together... Should she have gone with them? Protected them? No... From the news it had been a drunken driver. The twins in the end would've had no power over whether or not they were killed. It was a thought that didn't lessen the pain any more - it didn't make her think that she had failed her role as a mother any less.

Leo bringing Keirsta into his arms threw her off for a moment, a gasp disturbing the otherwise unpredictable rhythm of hiccups and sobs. She was an honest-to-god mess, and even though she hated for anyone to see her like this, at least it was Leo. She prayed in the back of her mind that they would have made a mistake, that any moment her twins would walk in the door and wonder what was going on. Why their parents seemed heartbroken and pale as snow. But every bone in her body now screamed that they were gone.... forever.

She allowed herself to weep, let any ugly, unshed tears just fall from her eyes. Her arms went around Leo's torso for security, her hands locking tightly as if a silent plead - Don't you leave me, either. Her throat constricted with the lack of air, an almost gasp taking over the sound as her body gulped for air. But it seemed that air was only used to push more tears out of her.

"H-How... How could we... could we have failed... this ba-adly? Her words were chopped, as much as she tried to keep them smooth. There was no straightening out her voice. Her eyes stung as it felt almost impossible that more tears were still coming out, and the lids were puffy. Her cheeks were flushed pale and nose cherry-tipped. It would take her a long time to recover from this look.
